Peter Quince

Candidate for Oregon’s 2nd Congressional District

Peter Quince Ashland, OR Writer, Filmmaker, Former Small Business Owner, Professional Education Class Content Creator, 33-year Oregon resident, Board member of Ashland Independent Film Festival and Ashland Food Coop.

My first job was for a Member of Congress while my mother was his congressional aide. That job gave me an appreciation for constituent service – the daily work of advocating for the people in my district. This painstaking work taught me the importance of advocating for all the people in the district, regardless of how they voted, because as President Obama said, “there is no red America and no blue America, but the United States of America.” I consider myself an “Obama Democrat”. What that means to me is a genuine effort to be pragmatic, to find the best solutions, and t be open to all sides of a discussion. I agree with Barack’s statement that he and the republicans “…want the same things, we just have different ideas about how to get there.”

What’s different is that now all Democrats, most Independents and a lot of Republicans are united in seeing what the most pressing needs are and the common sense solutions such as no more military- style attacks on citizens, on children, on legal residents or those whose legal status is in flux but who work, pay taxes, and live peacefully in our communities.

It’s clear to most that democracy in the United States is under threat. But the response has been inspiring. From the ground, the roots and branches, everywhere in this country, we see average folks be courageous, step up, organize protests, watch out for neighbors, and stand  firm. No one has to tell us what to do.

It’s just folks doing what we know is right.

Never underestimate the American people, especially not Oregonians. Congressional District 2 has a chance to speak with the loudest voice of any district in the country. When this district flips, it will be a shout-out to all of America letting everyone know, “No more writing us off. We are here, and you better work on solving OUR problems.” It will give our district a megaphone that no one can ignore.

Oregonians are a practical people; a maverick people. We chart our own course.

We’re not easily bamboozled. We have a chance to show the nation how to move forward together, find practical solutions, and be the America we know we can be
